As Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine.” Cocoa has been hailed around the world for its wonderful effect on the body not to mention its delicious flavor for over three thousand years. It is no wonder that the shelves are stocked with chocolate as Valentine’s Day rolls around.
Not enough has been said about the powerful wonders of cocoa. Some have said next to water, it is the next best beverage for your body.
Cocoa has been said to lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, it lowers cholesterol and even reduces the risk of cancer. Cocoa joins red wine, apples, onions and tea for providing polyphenols, protective antioxidant compounds which are known for their helpful effect on cardiovascular health. Cocoa also produces serotonin and dopamine – which elevates the mood. It is no wonder that many people turn to chocolate as a “pick me up.” Prozac also raises serotonin but cocoa doesn’t come with all the side effects.
